My journey / the first notes

The story
before the stage.

Before the qualifications and performances, there was a small keyboard and a mum who made learning feel like play. Isaac’s musical journey began at home.

A little keyboard.
A way into music.

Isaac’s mum introduced him to musical notes on a small Casio keyboard. She made learning fun and encouraged his curiosity.

The enjoyment of playing came first — before formal piano tuition, examinations or competitions.

The family’s first piano The $200 upright

02 / A family milestone

The family’s
first piano.

The second-hand upright cost $200. It was the first piano the family had owned, bought as a reward for Isaac and his mum.

Many of the keys were sticky. Playing was not always easy, but they persevered, and Isaac continued exploring the piano independently.

Its significance was more than its price: it represented the family’s support and the effort they were putting into learning together.

03 / Finding his own way

Several years
of discovery.

Isaac kept learning independently. Several years later, the family sought a piano teacher, who assessed him at approximately Grade 3 standard without prior formal piano tuition.

The assessment also revealed a problem. The sticky keys had encouraged him to use excessive force when playing, rather than the technique a responsive piano would allow.

A better foundation The Yamaha U3

04 / A new foundation

An instrument
that could respond.

The family subsequently purchased a used Yamaha U3 upright piano. Isaac could now develop his playing on an instrument that responded the way it should.

His journey continued into formal classical study, performances, accompaniment, conducting, teaching and musical qualifications.

The beginning remains part of the story: a small keyboard, a shared reward and the enjoyment of learning to make music.

Today, that journey continues at the piano, in front of a choir, with students and through the freedom of jazz.
